Indian Hills Homecoming week bringing more fun to Ottumwa

Courier staff writer

---- — OTTUMWA — Next week will be full of excitement for Ottumwans. Not only does Oktoberfest kick off on Tuesday, Oct. 1, but Indian Hills Community College also has a lot of big community events planned during their Homecoming week.

Changes to this year’s Homecoming are sure to make for fun times for students, alumni and the Ottumwa community.

All of the fun kicks off on Monday with a dinner for retirees of the college and a volleyball match against Missouri State-West Plains Community College. That leads into Tuesday, which features a film festival including two films, Cherish and Demonica, that were produced by alumni. The film festival will be free.

An evening 5K run and 2-mile walk highlight the activity on Wednesday, as well as the crowning of king and queen. The Homecoming Glow Run will begin at 7:15 p.m. with packet pickup taking place from 5:30-7 p.m. The Glow Run was one of the big changes to the schedule this year. Alumni Coordinator Bianca Myers is hoping that changes to the run will help boost participation.

“This year we are adding the glow aspect to the 5K,” she said. “We’ve already seen our pre-registration numbers increase.”

The participation fee for the run and walk is $25, but it is free for students. All of the proceeds will go to support student scholarships.

Those who take part will receive a free T-shirt and other glowing items, and the first male and female to finish will receive $50 Walmart gift cards. There will also be a costume contest with the top three costumes taking home $25 Walmart gift cards.

Later in the week, there will be a cultural display by the IHCC International Student Department on Thursday and the Centerville Homecoming reception on Friday at the Continental Hotel in Centerville from 4-7 p.m.

As the weekend rolls in, the fun continues. Indian Hills will partner with United Way to host their ninth annual car show on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at the Advanced Technology Center. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and costs $15 for all vehicles. All of the proceeds will go toward scholarships and the United Way.

There will be tons of great events going on at the car show, including a piston toss, a rock climbing wall brought by the National Guard and a pinewood derby race for the first 50 interested children. Everything will be free to participate in.

Homecoming week wraps up during the afternoon and evening on Saturday. The softball and men’s and women’s soccer teams all have contests at home, and there will be a free children’s craft fair from 1-3 p.m.

With all of these great events taking place, community members are encouraged to come out and have fun, especially in the glow run and car show.

“It’s a wonderful week, and we have a lot of fun,” Myers said. “We have a lot of participants, and hopefully this year we have a lot more participants in the glow run and car show.”
