Ottumwa students may see earlier start date

Ottumwa Courier

OTTUMWA — Students may need to prepare for a slightly shorter summer next year due to an earlier first day of school.

At the Ottumwa school district’s board meeting Monday night, members will vote to approve the 2013-14 school calendar, which includes an earlier start date.

Students would start school on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013. Students normally would have begun the first day of class the week of Aug. 26, 2013.

The start date is prior to the date included in the Iowa statute and therefore needs the approval of the Iowa Department of Education.

The board will also discuss playground equipment for the new south side elementary school, as well as approving Frevert-Ramsey-Kobes, Architects-Engineers, P.C. for the schematic design of the renovation of Douma Elementary School.

The school board will meet at 6 p.m. Monday in the board room at the Administration Office, 422 McCarroll Drive.
