Dexter makes new offer to striking workers
By MATT MILNER Courier staff writer
FAIRFIELD — Negotiations between Dexter Apache Holdings Inc., and International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 1293 have generated a new offer from the company.
Union members went on strike last week after negotiations failed to resolve differences on pay and medical insurance. Ed Miller, the union’s spokesman, said Wednesday the company has made a new offer to workers. He plans to present the proposal to them today.
Miller did not go into detail about the offer, saying it would not be proper to have the information in the media prior to presenting it to union members. He also declined to say whether he would recommend for or against acceptance.
The union maintains it is willing to accept increases in the workers’ share of insurance costs, but that any concession on that point must be met with increased pay to help offset the costs.
Dexter officials say their final pre-strike offer to the union was more generous than the one workers at the company’s foundry approved.
Negotiations resumed within days of the strike’s start. And, apart from some legal sparring, the two sides have not openly displayed animosity.
The company sought an injunction against the strikers last Monday, the first day of missed work. Judge Michael Mullins approved a temporary injunction, moving the strikers across the street from where they initially set up picket lines and restricting their numbers.
Union members criticized the move and their attorneys moved to quash the injunction. A hearing in the case is scheduled for April 30.
