Ottumwa water quality update

Ottumwa Courier

---- — OTTUMWA — Ottumwa Water and Hydro customers may have noticed a stronger scent of chlorine in their drinking water. Due to heavy recent runoff, the water requires additional treatment before being delivered to customers. Ottumwa's water supply is tested daily according to state and federal requirements, and meets all water quality standards for consumption. Customers can consume Ottumwa Water with confidence.

Ottumwa Water and Hydro General Manager Mike Heffernan said, "We routinely deal with changes in the turbidity and quality of the water we draw for treatment. What we are experiencing right now is typical for late winter and early spring when there is a lot of snow melt or rain water entering the Des Moines River basin. We have switched to our back up water supply until the river returns to more normal levels. Though customers may have noticed a stronger chemical scent recently, our treatment produces drinking water that is safe for consumption."
