---- — FAIRFIELD — Fairfield 1st Fridays Art Walk has been awarded one of 150 National Endowment for the Arts Challenge Grants in the amount of $10,000.

Challenge America Fast-Track Grants are offered to support projects which extend the reach of communities whose opportunities to experience a variety of the arts might be limited by geography, ethnicity, economics or disabilities. The two major outcomes of these grants are engagement for diversity and excellence in the arts or to strengthen the community through the arts.

Fairfield 1st Fridays Art Walk received its grant in support of Music on the Square as part of the 2014 summer 1st Fridays Art Walk events. These musical components are to feature selected musicians from throughout the Midwest and other regions of the country.

The grants focus on local projects in the arts that utilize professionally trained, experienced artists and art professionals. FFAW has received its funds as one of 150 projects out of 294 requests. These funded grants total $1.5 million and are spread across 46 states.

According to Art Walk Executive Director Cindy Woodbury, “We are thrilled to be given this opportunity to expand the outreach of Art Walk and to be able to bring regional musicians which the community might not have the opportunity to see and hear otherwise to our summer events. We know we have a great depth of talented musicians and artists in Fairfield who have supported and played at Art Walk events over the years. We continue to look at ways to support these musicians as well. It is our goal to have both local and regional musicians at all of the summer events. This grant is specifically awarded to expanding our opportunities to see and hear professional musicians from locations outside of southeast Iowa.”
