IPTV brings new library resources to Ottumwa

OTTUMWA — Kids spending time at the Ottumwa Public Library will have new resources available to help promote the connections between public media and early literacy and math skills, thanks to a new Library Corner placed in the library by Iowa Public Television.

The new IPTV Ready for School Library Corner will open at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, with a launch event at Liberty Elementary School, including story time with IPTV Kids Clubhouse host, Dan Wardell.

Members of the public are invited to attend the launch event and story time with Wardell that day from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at Liberty Elementary School, 50 Traxler Dr.

The Library Corners create a bright, fun-filled learning environment with age-appropriate materials for use by children, families and librarians. PBS KIDS DVDs, Martha Speaks Read Aloud books and resources, a colorful banner featuring PBS KIDS characters, a PEG + CAT standing character, a colorful rug and more, all help to create an inviting space for children. Online resources include PBS KIDS LAB, a website with more than 140 games and hands-on activities that help to build early math and literacy skills.

"We're pleased to expand these Library Corners to another location in Iowa," said Terry Rinehart, Director of Educational Services at Iowa Public Television. "With this Library Corner, families can spend time together reading books, engaging in hands-on activities and playing online games that support early reading skills like recognizing letters and sounds and early math skills such as counting and measurement."

"The Ottumwa Public Library is pleased to partner with IPTV to encourage and promote early literacy. The entire community benefits when we focus on kids reading," said Sonja Ferrell, Director of the Ottumwa Public Library.

The IPTV Library Corners are part of Iowa Public Television's Ready for School Initiative which works with Iowa communities to strengthen the math and literacy skills of children ages 2-8. Learn more at iptv.org/readyforschool.
