OTTUMWA — This holiday season takes a moment to honor the brave men and women who are serving our country by sending a holiday greeting. The Ottumwa office of the American Red Cross invites the community to sign greeting cards for members of the military, veterans and their families on Saturday.
Holiday Mail for Heroes is a nationwide program, and last year more than 1.8 million cards were distributed to the troops and their families. The Ottumwa Red Cross card making and signing party will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the Ottumwa office of the Red Cross at 408 E. Main St. Students from the Ottumwa School District have already made and signed 700 holiday cards.
For more than 130 years, the Red Cross has provided comfort and support to members of the United States military. Through Dec. 6, Americans can create and send cards to service members, veterans and their families who will receive cards across the country and around the world. The Red Cross invites the public to send messages of thanks and holiday cheer by mailing them to Holiday Mail for Heroes, P.O. Box 5456, Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456
To ensure that cards are delivered in time for the holidays, they must be postmarked no later than Dec. 6. Individuals are asked to refrain from sending letters, monetary donations or any other kinds of inserts with the cards. Please also refrain from using glitter. More information and card requirements can be found at redcross.org/holidaymail.
