Three WCCB events scheduled for May

OTTUMWA — May will be filled with activities sponsored by the Wapello County Conservation Board.

• A Wildflower Walk will be held Thursday, May 1. Spring is here, and the spring ephemeral wildflowers are in bloom. Join the Wapello CCB for the annual wildflower hike at Garrison Rock Wildlife Area. Enjoy a hike through this unique area and identify the spring woodland flowers as you go. The hike will begin at 5 p.m. in the Garrison Rock parking lot off Cliffland Road. This event is free, and no registration is required.

• The annual Youth Field Day is back on Saturday, May 10. This day is a fun and exciting way to introduce your child to the many outdoor wonders each season brings to southeast Iowa. Many outdoor and conservation groups come together to provide outdoor experiences to area youth ages 8 to 17. The event takes place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with check-in beginning at 7:30 a.m. Registration forms can be obtained from a committee member, by calling Norman at 641-682-0401, by calling Ann at 641-682-9902 or on the YFD Facebook page at www.facebook.com/youth.field.day. The cost is $10 per child, and registration is required by April 24 to ensure your child receives a shirt.

• Mike Krebill is very skilled in the identification and preparation of wild edibles. He will lead a full day wild edibles workshop on Saturday, May 17 with indoor and outdoor activities. Be involved in the collection and cooking of some common spring edible plants. The afternoon will include a mushroom foray with Iowa's Mushroom Club. The cost is $10 per person or $20 per family. Tastings will be provided, but participants should bring a sack lunch. A minimum of 10 must pre-register to hold this workshop, and only 28 spots are available. All registrations must be received by Friday, May 9.
