OTTUMWA — The Southeast Iowa Affiliate of Susan G. Komen is looking for volunteers for the local Race for the Cure committee as well as the affiliate board.
The local race will be held May 10, 2014, but preparations are beginning now, including contacts with sponsors, design of race materials, contacts with teams, survivor events and race-day organization. A full range of opportunities is available. The committee meets once a month for one to one-and-a-half hours until the month before the race.
The next race meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 7 in the boardroom at McCreery Cancer Center in Ottumwa. Everyone is invited to attend.
After 17 successful years of Race for the Cure held in Ottumwa, the committee is anxious to get interested volunteers from all 10 counties in the affiliate involved with the race. Money raised from the southeast Iowa race supports breast cancer education and screening in Wapello, Mahaska, Jefferson, Van Buren, Davis, Monroe, Lucas, Appanoose and Wayne counties.
In 1982, Nancy Brinker promised her sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. As part of that promise, the Race for the Cure series was developed as a means to fund education, research and early detection of breast cancer. In 2013, the Southeast Iowa Affiliate was able to grant over $160,000 in funds in its 10-county area for mammograms, ultrasounds and breast health education.
