OTTUMWA — The Friends of the Ottumwa Public Library group was chosen as the recipient of a Bright Ideas Community Enrichment Fund Grant from the Ottumwa Legacy Foundation.
The $5,520 grant was awarded to the Friends as a match for a new microfilm reader that is now a part of the Iowa/Genealogy Room in the library. The new machine is up and running and is now available for public use.
The library’s other two microfilm readers are more than 25 years old and are no longer serviceable. The new machine is a Konica-Minolta SL000 Digital Microfilm Scanner and since it is attached to a computer, the library now has the ability to save different microfilm slides to a PDF file and either print immediately or save for later. The views are much clearer and users are able to cut and paste into a much more desired viewing of the area you are focusing on. With the new computer in the room, patrons are also able to continue their research without having to go back and forth between machines numerous times.
