G.A.T.E. looking for contestants, hungry folks

ELDON — Gothic Area Tourism of Eldon is seeking contestants for its annual BBQ Rib Cook-Off to be held July 26, at the KD Center in Eldon.

The entry fee for the contest is 10 pounds of pork loin back ribs. The ribs are to be cooked on site and judging begins at 4:15 p.m. Ribs are judged by the taste, tenderness and appearance. A traveling trophy will be awarded, as well as $100 to first-, $75 to second- and $50 to third-place winners.

The festivities will also include an apple pie contest. Bring your favorite apple pie for the contest, along with a pie of your choice as an entry fee for the pie auction. Pies must be to the KD Center by 2 p.m. with judging taking place at 3 p.m. The apple pies will be judged on their taste, texture and appearance. First place will receive $75, $50 for second and $25 for third.

At 5 p.m., the donated ribs will be served as part of a freewill donation dinner, which will also include sweet corn, green beans, sliced tomatoes and watermelon. Save room for dessert, as the pie auction will begin after the meal is served. Proceeds from the evening will benefit G.A.T.E. for the betterment of the community.
