HEDRICK — The Hedrick American Legion Auxiliary will be observing Poppy Week May 19-26. Since 1921, the American Legion Auxiliary Poppy program has distributed the red crepe paper poppies across the country prior to Memorial Day in exchange for donations that go directly to assist our veterans, hospitalized veterans and their families in our community. The annual event pays tribute to those veterans who have died and honors the millions of Americans who have served their country.
The poppies were handmade at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown as part of their physical therapy program. All material is furnished by the American Legion Auxiliary, and the veteran receives a small amount for each flower made. A monetary gift is also sent to him from the local unit for his painstakingly made flower. The poppies and poppy cans will be found in Hedrick businesses and the Martinsburg station. Wear a poppy proudly in in honor of our veterans.
