Good Samaritan Society opens new facilities

OTTUMWA — The Good Samaritan Society of Ottumwa celebrated the grand opening of its new twin home facilities Friday.

“There are just a lot of people that aren’t quite ready for apartment living yet or ready to have to downsize. These homes are for that population of people,” said Brenda Miller, marketing coordinator for the Good Samaritan Society.

The twin homes will allow residents to enjoy the conveniences of the Good Samaritan Society while continuing to live an independent life. The twin homes will also provide all the luxuries of home. Residents are able to own small animals, paint the walls and garden if desired.

“Out here you are very independent and you have a much larger area," said Miller. "These start out at 1,600 square feet, so almost twice as big as the regular apartments,” said Miller.

Sixty-five years ago, the Good Samaritan Society became Ottumwa’s first nursing facility, but it was not until moving to its current location that expansion became a reality. In 1996, the organization purchased 65 acres of land, and plans of new developments began.

Growth continues to be on the agenda for the future. The Good Samaritan Society is looking into developing a low-income facility for those people who are in need of a different standard of living, explained Campus Administrator Dana Holland.

"The Good Samaritan Society is here to stay and thankful for the support of the community," said Holland while addressing the Ottumwa Chamber of Commerce ambassadors.
