Meth defendants have attorneys assigned

Ottumwa Courier

---- — OTTUMWA — Several of the defendants in a massive meth bust will have a state defense attorney.

Four people were arrested in mid-August in the case with four more arrested in June after authorities seized 33 pounds of meth from two Ottumwa homes and one in Newton.

James Fields, 51, Darrell Cosgrove, 28, and Alicia Choate, 19, have had attorneys appointed to work on their defense. Brett Whittington, another defendant in the case, is being represented by the public defender's office. The possibility of a conflict with the office representing multiple defendants in the same case explains why so many additional attorneys are being brought in for defendants.

Each defendant faces charges of conspiracy to deliver methamphetamine.
