American Legion Auxiliary reviews summer activities

Ottumwa Courier

---- — FAIRFIELD — The American Legion Auxiliary #47 met at the Fairfield VFW Hall recently, the agenda including a review of the summer's activities and a report from the Girls State attendee as a special guest.

Makayla Kessel, Girls State representative from the Fairfield Unit, attended in June along with about 280 other Iowa high school juniors. Kessel shared many positive experiences from Girls State, like developing friendships and learning more about political processes. She was elected as a delegate on the State Central Committee and met and became friends with a girl from Jessup who was elected governor and chose Kessel as her press aide, putting her in a position of making 10 speeches and helping the governor make appointments. Though not elected, Kessel was on the primary ballot for treasurer. One of her favorite speakers was Kathryn Koob, who was a diplomat. The Girls State closed with a formal reception with everyone wearing their prom gowns.

Fairfield Auxiliary member Mary Andersen has been appointed 2013-14 Girls State Director for the Iowa American Legion Auxiliary. Wyatt Andersen, son of Mary Andersen, received one of the Iowa Auxiliary Merit Award scholarships and was informed that he can reapply for the Merit Award again next year.

Shirley Kitch, treasurer, reported money will again be sent for veterans' needs at the VA Hospital in Iowa City, and $100 was approved for the district president's project of American Legion Auxiliary Emergency Fund, which assists Auxiliary members when times get tough. Kitch also noted a donation received from Violet Brown, sent with her membership dues.

The group approved ordering 1,000 poppies again for distribution in May 2014. Orders must be in by Oct. 20. Darlene Vorhies read an article from the National Auxiliary publication indicating changes in policy on poppies, including only active military servicemen will be making poppies, in the past being made also by veterans in VA hospitals.

The American Legion Auxiliary Fall Conference is being hosted by the Mount Pleasant American Legion and their Auxiliary on Oct. 5.

The next Fairfield Auxiliary meeting will be held at 1 p.m. Nov. 20 at the VFW Hall. Wives of current Fairfield/Jefferson County servicemen are welcome to join the Auxiliary. For membership information, call Rita VanDerSnick at 641-472-4269.
