OTTUMWA — The Ottumwa Regional Legacy Foundation recently awarded $4,000 to the Ottumwa Youth Basketball program. Funds will assist the league in revamping the program to provide boys and girls in grades five and six the opportunity to learn the game of basketball, including sportsmanship.
Changes to the program will include a training camp, offered to students on Oct. 26 and Nov. 2; a league schedule that includes both boys and girls games on Saturdays; and training to certify coaches and referees on how to coach, officiate, proper etiquette and procedures. Coaches will be nonparents and must be certified to participate. Grant funds also allowed the league to purchase enough balls to provide increased access to equipment for skill development. Each student will also receive a league shirt. League sign-up information will be released soon.
“I’m very excited about getting this grant to support the Ottumwa Youth Basketball program,” said Kevin Kanaski, OHS boys head coach. “The money will allow us to make significant improvements for teaching the fundamentals of basketball and other important life lessons.”
