Hazelle Lanman, 86, Keosauqua

KEOSAUQUA — Hazelle Lorene Nelson Lanman, 86, of Keosauqua, died Sunday, July 25, 2010, at her home.

She was born Oct. 30, 1923, in Harrisburg Township, Van Buren County, to Leo Richard “Dick” and Pansy Lorene Miller Nelson.  Hazelle graduated from Bonaparte High School in 1939 and worked at the Bonaparte Glove Factory and Sheaffer Pen & Pencil in Ft. Madison in wartime production of airplane radios. She graduated as a Cadet Nurse from St. Joseph School of Nursing in Ottumwa at the end of World War II and worked at Jefferson County Hospital, Fairfield, until moving to Keosauqua in 1948.

She married Clay Michael Lanman Feb. 14, 1948. After raising her family, she worked as a charge nurse at the Good Samaritan Center, Keosauqua, from its opening in 1972 until retiring 15 years later. Hazelle was active in Keosauqua United Methodist Church, Van Buren County Historical Society, Fairfield Farmers’ Market, Girl Scouts and the Something Better food buying cooperative.

Surviving are five daughters, Patricia Ann Lanman (Jerry Redington) and Christie Lou Daugherty of Keosauqua, Deborah Diane Bishop of Decorah, Leilani Michelle McDonald (Michael) of Iowa Falls and Ramona Lorene Franklin (Danny) of Keosauqua; a son, Michael David Lanman (Tabitha) of Keosauqua; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three nieces and two nephews. Also surviving are sisters, Dorothy Ann Watson of Snowflake, Ariz., and Mary Lou Lydolph of Lavaca, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; daughter Larissa Jane Lanman and grandson, Stiles Alan Cummings.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday July 28, 2010, in Keosauqua United Methodist Church; Rev. Douglas Harding and Larry Shipley officiating.

Visitation and buffet lunch will be 11:30-2:30 p.m. at the church prior to the service. Cremation will follow the service with burial in Purdom Cemetery, Keosauqua, at a later date.

Hazelle requested memorials to Keosauqua United Methodist Church or Friends of Lacey. Memorials may be left at the church or mailed to the family at 218 S. First St., Keosauqua, Iowa 52565.
