Dorrell Chidester

OTTUMWA — Wesley Dorrell Chidester, 93, formerly of 552 Crestview Ave., died at 11:42 a.m. August 13, 2013, at Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa.

He was born on April 26, 1920, in Blakesburg to Hale and Bernice Kinkade Chidester. He married Ileen Albright April 19, 1943, in Lancaster, Mo. She preceded him in death on July 29, 2009. They were married for 66 years.

A graduate of Blakesburg High School in 1938, Dorrell served four years in the U.S. Air Force, having served as Chief Inspector in the 20th Air Force in the South Pacific during World War II. He transferred into the Iowa National Guard, where he was the very first Company Commander of Company C #224 Engineering Heavy Construction Battalion for seven years. He retired after 21 years of service as Major. He then studied computer maintenance at Indian Hills Community College at age 45. He had been General Foreman at Standard Kollsman and has held his real estate license and insurance license.

Having retired in 1980, he and his wife spent six months of the year in Ottumwa at their cabin on the Des Moines River and wintered six months each year in Alamo, Texas. He loved fishing, collecting at least 300 rods and reels. Some new ones he never got to use but proclaimed he would live long enough to use every one.

Dorrell was a life member of Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and of O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.

Surviving are two daughters, Sherry (Dennis) Greenfield of Ottumwa and Stephanie Samuelson of West Des Moines; six grandchildren, Lorie (Ron) Baker of Ottumwa, Jon (Kim) Mason of Fairfield and Scott Mason of Kansas City, Mo., Randy (Robin) Greenfield of Lacrosse, Wis., Robert (Amy) Greenfield and Cody Greenfield both of Pueblo, Colo.; eight great-grandchildren, Austin Drummond, Tyler Baker, Leah Baker, Tina Freeland, Heather Mason, Hunter Mason, Faith Greenfield and Tyler Greenfield; three great-great-grandchildren, Hailey, Lexus and Kasey; three sisters, Beatrice Anderson of St. Joseph, Mo., Maxine (Bill) Stackhouse of Ottumwa and Jo Ann (Don) Romerman of Lake of the Ozarks, Mo.; a brother, Larry (Janet) Chidester of Sun Lake, Ariz.; and a brother-in-law, Willie Gullett of Mountain Home, Ark.
