BLAKESBURG – Billy Lee Smith, 68, of 307 E. State St. died at 6:12 a.m. May 11, 2013 at his home.
He was born August 16, 1944 in Ottumwa to V.R. and Wilda Laura Lester Smith. He married Mary Elizabeth Stephanie May 23, 1968. She preceded him in death April 9, 1993.
A graduate of Pleasantville High School in 1963, he had been a resident of Blakesburg since 1964.
Bill had worked for McFarland’s Pool Hall, at Romerman’s Feed and Grain, for over 20 years at Henderson Auto Works and again for Romerman’s Feed and Grain before retiring in 2008.
Bill was a member of Blakesburg Summer Ball Parents. He was an avid race fan, enjoyed bowling and all sports. He participated in slow pitch softball, had coached many youth teams and had been an umpire for Monroe County Little League.
Surviving is his son, Aaron “A.J.” Smith and his fiancé, Nicole Fenton of Agency; a soon to be step-granddaughter, Cheyanne; his companion of the past 16 years, Judy Davis of Blakesburg; 6 sisters and brothers, Betty Davis, Bob Smith, Bonnie Stufflebeam, Beverly Ware, Butch (Lila) Smith and Brenda (Steve) Leach along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Barbara Heckert.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Terry Chapman officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Blakesburg Summer Ball Parents, Blakesburg Fire and Rescue, Agency Fire and Rescue, or National Sprint Car Hall of Fame.
