Harry Mahannah

OTTUMWA -- Dr. Harry A. Mahannah II died on May 15, 2013 after a courageous battle with brain cancer. He was born on February 12, 1937 to Dorothy (Gilfillan) and Harry Mahannah I in Spirit Lake, Iowa.

He was predeceased by his parents and his brother-in-law, Jack Klopp. He leaves behind his wife of 35 years, Jane; daughter, Kathi Mahannah at Good Samaritan Center in Indianola, Iowa; sons, Tim of Oakland, Calif., and Ted (Rhonda) of Coralville, Iowa; stepsons, Ric Dugan of Hagerstown, Md., and Mike Dugan (Tina) of Moody, Ala. He also leaves his sister, Claire Klopp of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio and nieces, Katie Osborne of Ohio and Mindy Heimsoth of Ill.. His grandchildren are Sage, Tia and Tera of Oakland, Calif.; Lindsay, Lily, Raven, and Zander of Coralville, Iowa; and Leah and Jackie of Pelham, Ala., and Tyler of Moody, Ala.

Dr. Mahannah graduated in 1955 from Spirit Lake High School, where his father was the band director and later superintendent, until his death. In 1962, Harry graduated with a medical degree from the University of Iowa. He later went on to become board certified in psychiatry and practiced with several of his uncles at the Gilfillan Clinic in Bloomfield, Iowa. In 1993, he became board certified in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He practiced in Ottumwa, Iowa; Lansing, Mich.; Muncie,Ind.; Birmingham, Ala.; Charlotte, N.C. and Hilton Head, S.C. before returning to Birmingham in 2011. Music was a passion for Harry who was an excellent harmonica player and enjoyed playing guitar with other strummers.

Visitation will be held prior to services for Dr. Mahannah from 1-3 p.m. on May 24, 2013 at the Asbury United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorials be made to AUMC, 6690 Cahaba Valley Road, Birmingham, AL 35242.

The family wishes to gratefully thank Reverend Greg Faust and the congregation of the Asbury United Methodist Church for their extraordinary support during Harry's illness. They also wish to thank their "special angels," Kesha, Grace and Tasha and the nurses and staff of Gentiva Hospice.
