William Hadley

OTTUMWA — William Dale Hadley, 82, of Greenville, Texas, formerly of Ottumwa, passed away on May 11, 2013, at Briarcliff Health Center in Greenville.

He was born on July 16, 1930, in Kansas City, Mo., and adopted by Albert William Hadley and Dorothy Mabel Banta Hadley of Ridgefarm, Ill. William was named after his father and his mother's brother, Dale Banta. His artistic bent surfaced as a child in his ability to draw, paint and play the piano. From Illinois, the family relocated to Ottumwa, where Bill graduated seventh in his class in June 1948. He was a member of the Ottumwa High School Honor Society, Debate Club and Dramatic Club. It was then that Bill's interest in business emerged as he served as business manager of the yearbook. Bill began college at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force for a brief period. After receiving a medical discharge, Bill finished his bachelor's degree in business administration with a minor in marketing in 1953 at the University of Miami. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity there.

Bill provided for his family for 40 years as a buyer and salesman for Sears, Sanger-Harris, Saks and Neiman-Marcus. When he wasn't working, he enjoyed spending time with his wife, Jo, and two daughters, Sheria and Susan. Bill was an avid gardener and was known for his roses, gladiolus and tropical flowers. He was a dog lover throughout his life. Bill worshipped at Presbyterian churches wherever he lived and was a member of the Big Brothers organization.

Bill is survived by his daughters, Sheria Baylus and husband, Adam, and Susan Slinkard and husband, Gary; granddaughters, Katherine and Erin Traylor, and grandsons, Stephen Traylor and Caleb, Joshua and Nathan Slinkard.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jo Sheria.

He was laid to rest at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas.

Donations in his memory can be made to the James 1 Ministry of FBC Greenville, 2703 Wesley St., Greenville, Texas 75401, an organization making adoptions affordable to families and offering support to the existing foster and adoptive community of Hunt County, Texas.
