Teresa Matkovich

RATHBUN — Teresa Matkovich, 87, of Rathbun, passed away Feb. 10, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville.

She was born on Oct. 15, 1926, in Rathbun, the daughter of Anton “Tony” and Mary (Yakovich) Chebuhar. Teresa married Mark Matkovich on Aug. 21, 1943, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Centerville. To their union of marriage, four children were born, Linda, Mark, Steve and Susan.

Teresa was an active member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Rathbun in her early years. She spent several years at St. Anthony’s teaching catechism classes as well as engaging in the role of cantor with the church. Teresa and Mark passionately ran Bingo at St. Anthony’s for many years, as well as playing Bingo where she made friendships that lasted a lifetime. There were no strangers in her life. She loved to talk and had a witty sense of humor.

Teresa made the transition to membership with the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Centerville in the latter part of her life. She enjoyed actively participating in the Lord’s Cupboard through the church. Teresa was also a longtime member of the hospital auxiliary, as well as a member of the Walnut City Woman’s Club.

She enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially the time she was able to spend with her husband Mark on the family farm. Teresa also enjoyed fishing, mowing grass and listening on her radio to sports.

She is survived by her three children, Mark Matkovich of Blue Grass, Steve (Des) Matkovich of East Moline, Ill., and Susan Matkovich of Franklin, Mass.; two grandchildren, Amy Matkovich Port Byron, Ill., and Emily Matkovich of Davenport; three great-grandchildren, Katie, Madison and Mathew Matkovich, all of Port Byron, Ill.; a brother, Jim (Catherine) Chebuhar of Ottumwa; adopted daughters, Alice Jones of Albia and Sherry Kollmann; and nieces and nephews.
