Earlene Burton

BLOOMFIELD — Earlene Burton, 68, of rural Bloomfield, died Feb. 11, 2014, at her home.

She was born Dec. 25, 1945, in Dothan, Ala., to Willie and Sammie Mae Nolan Hobbs. She married Dan Burton Dec. 27, 1969, in Fort Rucker, Ala.

In 1954, Earlene was a Salvation Army Junior Soldier in Dothan, Ala., and was selected for several Salvation Army summer camps because of her musical ability. She would have a love for music the rest of her life.

She was voted in as the secretary for the Fort Gordon Officer Wives’ Club in 1985 and 1986. She worked with the Fort Gordon general’s wife on many projects to improve the beautification of the post, improve the soldiers' moral and help the new soldiers' wives adjust to life in the Army.

Earlene worked at Harpers Plantation, Making Memories and the Flower Shop. She won first place in the Davis County WBA Tournament during the 1994-95 season with a local bowling team. The team went to state in 1996.

She joined the St. Pentecostal Church while living in Augusta, Ga. She loved spending time with her family and being referred to as “Mema.”

She is survived by her husband; three sons, Brent (Tracie) Burton, David (Tiffany) Burton, both of Bloomfield, Howie (Beverly) Elmore of Dothan, Ala.; 10 grandchildren; four sisters, Margaret Jean (John) Lee, Betty Sue (Don) Bigbee, Joann Godwin, Lynda (Maston) Harrell; and three brothers, Willie, Phillip and twin Earl Hobbs.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Billy Sam, Winton and Arthur Dale Hobbs.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield; Pastor Lloyd Osborn officiating. Burial of the cremains will be at the Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery in Dothan, Ala., at a later date.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday with the family present to greet friends from 2 p.m. until the time of the service

A memorial has been established to Good Samaritan Hospice.
