MORAVIA — Madeline Leola Stanley, 86, of Moravia, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, under the care of Monroe County Hospice at Monroe Care Center in Albia.
Madeline was born Feb. 15, 1928, to Everett C. and Florence E. (Harkins) Phillips in Fremont. She married Gerald DeWayne Stanley July 27, 1947. They shared 61 years of marriage together before his passing March 18, 2009.
A graduate of Fremont High School, class of 1946, Madeline took care of DeWayne’s mother prior to their marriage. She then was a homemaker, helped on the farm, and worked side by side DeWayne and their son, Jerry, at Stanley’s Standard Gas Station in Moravia.
Madeline liked being outdoors, camping, traveling, playing with her dog, Trixie, and talking with people at the station. She enjoyed trips with DeWayne to Arkansas for watermelon, to bring back to Iowa, and sell. She enjoyed embroidering and teaching her daughters how to as well. Her favorite food was ice cream.
Madeline is survived by four children, Ron Stanley of Yarmouth, Iowa, Jerry Stanley of Albia, Connie Shipman of Centerville, and Alice Bennink of Osceola; 11 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; a sister, Doris Pearson of Albia; and a sister-in-law, Suzie Phillips of Fremont.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, DeWayne; a daughter, Janet Summers; a grandson, Wesley Worth Graham; a brother, Junior Phillips; and a brother-in-law, Joe Pearson Sr.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Church of the Nazarene in Moravia, with Pastor Terry Chapman officiating. Burial will follow services at Hillcrest Cemetery in Moravia, with lunch provided by the Church of the Nazarene.
Visitation was held on Wednesday at Tharp Funeral Home in Albia.
A memorial has been established to the family, the Church of the Nazarene or to Monroe County Hospice.
