BLAKESBURG — Richard “Dick” N. Walter, 77, of 8854 215th Ave., died at 9:05 a.m. February 18, 2014 at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
He was born January 14, 1937 in Keokuk, IA to Herman J. and Lucille V. Walter. He married Patricia Louise Mullen on June 14, 1958.
Dick was a graduate of Keokuk High School and earned a B.A. in Business from Carthage College in 1959. He began working at John Deere Ottumwa Works in 1959, holding various positions including Purchasing Manager, General Supervisor of Assembly, Traffic Manager and Industrial Engineering Division Engineer. He retired in 1987 and Dick then continued farming for the next 20 years.
He enjoyed gardening, cooking and woodworking. He had been a member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge #347, and participated with the Elks bowling team in his younger years. Dick also bowled with the John Deere bowling team and had played tennis while in high school and college. He was a member of John Deere Retirees and a social member of the Knights of Columbus.
He enjoyed spending time with family and especially enjoyed traveling to China twice with his daughter and son-in-law when they brought home their two daughters.
Surviving is his wife, Pat; two daughters, Kathy Gates of Ottumwa and Deb (David) Shawley of North Aurora, IL; four grandchildren, Susan Gates, Michael Gates, Hope Shawley and Joy Shawley; a brother-in-law, Ed (Jean) Mullen of Burlington, MA; two nephews; several cousins and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Van Gates and grandparents.
Funeral Mass will be 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Patrick Hilgendorf presiding. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. A Christian Wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
