Ruth L. VanFossan, 89, formerly of 102 W. Finley Ave., died at 11:52 a.m. Sunday, March 17, 2013, at Ridgewood Nursing and Rehab Center.
She was born Nov. 19, 1923 in Ottumwa to John and Maude Smith Eiler. She married Kenneth VanFossan. He preceded her in death.
A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1942, she received a degree in missionary from Central Bible College in Springfield, Mo.
She joined the U.S. Coast Guard where she was a keypunch operator in New York. After serving in the Coast Guard she returned to Ottumwa and was employed at John Morrell & Co. as a keypunch operator. Ruth then worked in the office at VanFossan Construction and later in the office for Dr. McKeown.
She had attended Wildwood Evangelical Free Church and currently the First Pentecostal Assembly of God.
Surviving are four daughters, Ruth Ann (Robert) Geurts, of Knoxville, Linda (Rex) Messersmith, of Lehigh, Terri (Gary) Bergman, of Ottumwa, and Janet (Gary) Hart, of Des Moines; 11 grandchildren, Kenny, Jamie, Trent, Nick, Madison, Shelby, Stephanie, Staci, Clayton, Sarri and Bobby; and three great-grandchildren, Parker, Carter and Willa.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home; with Rev. Mel Kendall officiating.
Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with family present from 6-8 p.m. Monday.
