Joanna “Jo” Wolbers, 65, Ottumwa

OTTUMWA — Joanna “Jo” Wolbers, 65, of Dubuque, formerly of Ottumwa, passed away March 26, 2013, at home surrounded by her family.

Joanna was born Jan. 6, 1948, in Ottumwa, the daughter of Ivan and Sylvia (Kelly) Blomgren. She married Mark Wolbers on July 8, 1967, at St. Patrick’s Church in Ottumwa.

She graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1966.

She worked for John Morrell & Co. in Ottumwa, JC Penney as a clerk and Gibson’s also as a sales clerk, but for most of her life, she was a homemaker.

Above all else, Jo excelled at being a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Jo was known by all of those that loved her as an exceptionally warm and kind-hearted person. She enjoyed collecting angels, gardening, arts and crafts, traveling with her husband and doting on her five grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Mark; children, Todd (Rachel Krubsack) Wolbers of Oshkosh, Wis., Chad (Regan) Wolbers of Dubuque and Jason (Tony) Wolbers of Madison, Wis.; her grandchildren, Bronwyn, Liam, Kenna, Josie and Gavin; one sister, Linda (Darrel) Stanton; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mary Ann (Dick) Hefel, LeRoy (Eunice) Bastian, Larry (Katie) Wolbers, Robert (Margot) Wolbers, Keith (Carol) Hilkin, Ken (Gwen) Loes, John (Monica) Wolbers, Brian (Sharon) Wolbers, Paul (Martha) Gartner, Dick (Jolene) Bybee, Phyllis Wolbers and Veronica (LaMont) Gaston.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her mother and father-in-law, Clarence and Anita Wolbers; her sister, Sharon (Mike) Long; brothers-in-law Neal and Samuel Wolbers; and a nephew, Andrew Wolbers.

Due to Holy Week, a funeral liturgy will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Trinity Church, Dubuque; with Rev. Dwayne Thoman officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Dubuque.

Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd, Dubuque, where there will be a wake service at 3 p.m.

The family wishes to thank the Finley Hospital and the Wendt Regional Cancer Center, Dubuque Internal Medicine and Dr. Mark Hermann and his staff, and Hospice of Dubuque, especially Ann and Elizabeth. Special thanks also to her son Chad for being there for all of Jo’s treatments and to Chad's wife, Dr. Regan Wolbers, for compassionately answering our medical questions and concerns over the last two years.

Memorials may be directed to the Wendt Regional Cancer Center in care of the Finley Foundation or to Hospice of Dubuque.
