OTTUMWA – Wayne R. “Popeye” Carr, 85, of 13464 65th St., died December 22, 2013 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.
He was born May 3, 1928 in Ottumwa to Hugh and Bertha McCarty Carr. He married Phyllis J. Crane September 2, 1949.
A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1946, he was a contractor for 42 years having owned and operated Carr Construction. In 1983, he purchased Wormhoudt Lumber and Hardware which he owned and operated until its closing in 2013.
He was a member of the Ottumwa Church of the Brethren, B.P.O. Elks Lodge #347 and he enjoyed golfing every Thursday morning. He served for over 30 years on the Wapello County Board of Review.
Surviving is his wife, Phyllis; two sons, Danny (Barbara) Carr of Shawnee, KS and Paul Carr of Ottumwa; a daughter, Theresa Carr of Ottumwa; 4 grandchildren, Stephen (Lisa) Carr, Sarah (Pat) Rohrer, Rebecca (John) Allison and Laura (Dustin) Saner; 5 great-grandchildren, Tyler John Allison, Emma Nicole Rohrer, Conner Wayne Rohrer, Marshall Wayne Carr and Declan Michael Saner; a sister, Juanita Merrick of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold, Don and Jack Carr and a sister, Louise Northup.
Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.
Cremation will follow the visitation.
