OTTUMWA — Loren William Hagedon, 91, loving Christian man, husband, dad, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away at 1:45 a.m. January 31, 2014, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center with his three children at his bedside.
He was born October 13, 1922, in Ottumwa to Walter and Flora McDowell Hagedon. He married Margaret Lavelle Rudd on April 23, 1948.
Loren was a 1941 graduate of Ottumwa High School. He worked for Lockheed for one year prior to entering the military. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946, servicing the planes that carried the paratroopers into Normandy on D-Day.
He was employed at John Deere Ottumwa Works for 34 years, retiring as Tool and Die Inspector in 1981. He served as the financial secretary for Local 74 from 1962 to 1981 and was the recording secretary for Community 1st Credit Union Board from 1982 to 2010.
Loren was affiliated with both Davis St. Christian Church and Zion Community Church of God, where he actively attended weekly and happily enjoyed sharing potluck dinners and fellowship. At Davis St. Christian Church he had served as elder, Sunday school teacher, financial secretary, and serving on the board and other committees.
He and his wife, Margaret, loved to travel, having visited every state in the U.S.A. and made many trips abroad. His most cherished trip was just recently, at the age of 88, traveling to Greece with his grandson, David.
Many people know Loren for his extensive love of gardening and his prized exotic collection of iris. His interests were woodworking, woodcarving, ceramics, metal working. He carved many eagle-handled canes for wounded veterans.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; three children, Sharon (Greg) Bowman, Gary (Brenda) Hagedon and Marsha Snyder, all of Ottumwa; six grandchildren, Misty Bowman, Rev. Shawna (Jennie) Bowman, David (Elizabeth) Snyder, Stephen (Micaela) Bowman, Jordan Hagedon, Joseph Hagedon; five great-grandchildren, Matthew Weber, Michaela Jones, Samuel Weber, Genny Jones, Jonah Weber and baby Snyder to be born in March; and faithful companion dogs, Lady and Sheldon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Cloyd Hagedon; and a sister, Veta Hagedon.
He was a very honest, upstanding man and his loyalties ran deep. His children are very proud of the Christian life he led and how he raised them in the Christian faith.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Jesse Elkins officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Sunday with the family present from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Heartland Humane Society in memory of Loren and his beloved pets, Snap, Peppy and Holly.
