---- — ALBIA — James “Jim” Stephen Gilland, 87, of Albia, died Jan. 31, 2014, at Monroe Care Center in Albia.

Jim was born April 2, 1926, to Coy E. and Ollie (Steele) Gilland in Fredric. He married Rosella LaMar on June, 26, 1950, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Albia. They were blessed with six sons, Steve, Stan, Bernie, John, Tony and Matt.

A graduate of Eddyville High School, class of 1943, Jim continued his education at electrical correspondence school in Scranton, Penn. He owned at operated Gilland Electric from 1943-2005, when he retired.

Jim was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Albia, Knights of Columbus St. Mary’s Council 4167 and a fourth-degree member of the James R. Baldridge Assembly 1925, where he held the position of Grand Knight twice. He also was active as Scout Master for the Cub Scouts. In his younger years, Jim liked square dancing and always enjoyed going to work. He also loved his family and the time spent with them.

Jim is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rosella of Albia; five sons, Steve (Sherry) Gilland of Ft. Worth, Texas, Stan (Susan) Gilland of Blakesburg, Bernie Gilland of Albia, Tony (Tamie) Gilland of Albia and Matt (Jody) Gilland of Albia; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a sister, Patricia (Alan) Madsen of Champaign, Ill.; and a brother, Jerry (Bea) Gilland of Mitchellville.

He was preceded in death by a son, John; his parents; and a daughter-in-law, Minnie (Stethen) Gilland.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Albia; Fr. Michael E. Volkmer, C.PP.S. officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. Sunday at Tharp Funeral Home in Albia with Jim’s family present from 4-8 p.m. A rosary will be led by Knights of Columbus St. Mary’s Council 4167 at 4 p.m., and a Christian wake service will follow at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

An open memorial has been established in Jim’s name.
