OTTUMWA — Jerrold Rae “Jet” Ludwig, 66, of 512 N. Johnson Ave., died at 12 p.m. January 12, 2014, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
He was born December 27, 1947, in Newark, Mo., to William and Leta Bowles Ludwig. He married Linda Vandello on November 15, 1969; they later divorced.
Jerry attended Ottumwa High School and served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam.
He had worked for the Rock Island Railroad, Ralston Purina, John Deere & Co. in Waterloo and Everco.
Jerry was an active member of the Ottumwa Heartland Bootscooters, and a member, officer and trustee of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #114. He enjoyed fishing, riding his motorcycle, playing cards and dancing. He was happy and content wherever he was. Jerry was a man with a soft heart, who enjoyed nature and the simple things in life. He was kind and willing to help anyone in need. He loved his children and grandchildren. He always had a big smile on his face.
Surviving are his children, Angela Gillam of Richland, Sheri Knapp of Urbandale, Jaime (Micki) Ludwig of Ottumwa and Amy (Kevin) Phillips of Cedar Rapids; 10 grandchildren, Brittany, Gage, Ava, Kayla, Jordan, Aleah, Amber, Carson, Levi and Keegan; two sisters, Lillian Johnson of Ottumwa, Betty Black of Bloomfield; a brother, William (Pat) Ludwig Jr. of Hillsboro; several nieces and nephews and special friend, Sherry James.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Roby, Harold, Danny and Carl Ludwig; a sister, Velma Fetters.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Mel Kendall officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Tuesday with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
