OTTUMWA — Barbara Jean James, 85, of Ottumwa, died at 5:30 p.m. January 12, 2014, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born February 28, 1928, in Ollie, Iowa, to Rex and Marie Allsup Follman. She married Earl Dean James on November 15, 1947, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He preceded her in death on February 21, 2005.
Barbara Jean graduated from Sigourney High School in 1946. She worked at Benner Food Store, Standard Kollsman and retired from Ottumwa Community Schools in 1998. While an employee with Ottumwa schools in food service, she was presented the Extra Mile Award.
She attended the First United Methodist Church.
Barbara Jean was admired by her family and friends for her delicious home cooking, chocolate pie and Texas cake. She and her husband, Dean, enjoyed camping with Good Sams and square dancing with B Squares. She will most be remembered by her devotion and support to family as well as a thoughtful friend.
Surviving are her sons, Richard (Crystal) James of Ottumwa and Russell (Linda) James of Rocky Mount, Mo.; grandchildren, Christian (Jeanna) James of Ankeny, Ryan (Nichole) James of Anchorage, Alaska, Angela (Brian) Motley of North Liberty and Chad (Laura) James of Harker Heights, Texas; great-grandchildren, Grady, Lydia, Harper, Cole, Allie, Jace and Aubrie; a sister, Clara Yoder of Richland; several cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Gordon Follman and a sister, Juanita Bragg.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jon Disburg officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday.
