ALBIA — Geraldine Jo “Gerry Jo” Murphy Starns, 62, of Albia, passed away March 29, 2013, at Monroe County Hospital in Albia.

Gerry Jo was born Nov. 14, 1950, in Albia, to Edward J. and Geraldine “Gerry” (Mitchell) Murphy. She grew up and attended school in Albia, graduating from Albia High School with the class of 1969.

Gerry Jo worked at the Monroe County Hospital as a CNA for many years, where she thoroughly enjoyed taking care of the patients. She was a very kind, loving and generous person who would do anything to help others. She thoroughly enjoyed going to garage sales. Gerry Jo’s favorite thing was spending time with and taking care of her nieces and nephews, and later her great-nieces and nephews.   

Gerry Jo is survived by two sisters, Judy (Doug) Alexander of Fairfield and Susan (Alan) Ammons of Albia; a brother, Edward J. (Sue) Murphy of Albia; and eight nephews and three nieces, Scott (Stacy), Jason (Amber), Molly, Ryan and Nate Ammons; Jeff (Tonia), Chris, and Matt (Lindsey) Alexander; Michelle (Doug) Weldon, Mike (Carrie) Gray and Monica (Richard) Tharp. Gerry Jo is also survived by many great-nieces and nephews.

Gerry Jo was preceded in death by her parents, Edward J. and Gerry Murphy.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday at Tharp Funeral Home in Albia; with Fr. Michael E. Volkmer, C.PP.S. officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Albia.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at Tharp Funeral Home in Albia with Gerry Jo’s family present throughout the day and evening. A Christian Wake service will begin at 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

An open memorial has been established.
