Bernard Louis Smith, 71, of Corona, Calif., formerly of Ottumwa, passed away Nov. 27, 2012.
He was born Dec. 1, 1940, in Ottumwa, the son of Robert and Helen Smith.
Bernard was inducted into the Army in 1961, where he served two years, then he re-enlisted to the Navy/Marines in 1964, where he received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Vietnam) and the National Defense Service Medal. Bernard worked as a maintenance supervisor for Santa Ana Unified School District for 10 years. He was a member of American Legion Post 328 and Circle City Kiwanis.
Surviving are wife of 37 years, Barbara Smith; two daughters, Nicole (Terry) Hennessey and Erin (Jaime) Day; and six grandchildren, Daniel Hennessey, Faith Hennessey, Alyssa Hennessey, Grace Day, James Day and Michael Day.
Mass services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Matthew Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, Calif.
Friends will be received for viewing from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 2140 W. Ontario Ave., Corona, Calif. 92882.
