OTTUMWA — Joyce Armstrong Amos, 83, of # 1 Pennsylvania Place Apt. 1 died at 10:55 a.m. March 29, 2013 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born October 30, 1929 in Ottumwa to Ora and Cecyle Palmer Armstrong.

A resident of Ottumwa all her life, she graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1949.  She retired in 1981 after 32 years of service at Bell Telephone Company.  She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Telephone Pioneers, Communication Workers of America, Wapello County Genealogy Society, Civil War Round Table, Wapello County Historical Society and Women’s Bowling League.  Joyce was instrumental in saving the steps at Ottumwa High School.

She is survived by her husband, Bill Amos of Ottumwa; a daughter, Rhonda (Gary) Smith of Ottumwa; a son, Bob (Brianne) Hanshaw of Niota, IL; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren; five step-children, Stephen (Terry) Amos of Raleigh, NC, William (Diane) Amos of Santa Rosa, CA, Dee Ann Cocci of Pelican Island, NJ, Ron (Judy) Amos of Ottumwa, and Gi Gi Tennyson of Marion; 17 step-grandchildren and 15 step-great grandchildren; a sister, Shirley A. Christiansen of Niceville, Fl; Joyce’s dog, Sophie.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Illa Jean, Orrine Scott, and Willa Gail Bridges; a brother, Robert Armstrong and a step-brother Wayne Armstrong.

Her body has been cremated.

 A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Richard Schlotter officiating.  Inurnment will be in Ottumwa Cemetery.

 Family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. for visitation Friday at the funeral home.
