OTTUMWA — William H. “Bill” Overturf, 85, of 1319 Glenwood Ave., went home to be with the Lord at 11 a.m. March 16, 2014, at Ridgewood Nursing & Rehab Center.
Bill was born December 27, 1928, in Ottumwa to George and Mary Irene Stickler Overturf. He married Dorothy Bitner, and they later divorced. He married Shirley Peters on October 25, 1958, and she preceded him in death on April 25, 1995. He married Betty Vannice on May 1, 2000.
A 1946 graduate of Ottumwa High School, Bill served with the U.S. Marine Corps. He worked for 24 years for John Morrell & Co. until the plant closed in 1973 and he then worked for John Deere Ottumwa Works for 17 years.
Bill was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the International Watch Fob Association. He was an avid bowler, enjoyed traveling and was deeply committed to his family.
Surviving are his wife, Betty; six children, Bill (Janet) Overturf of Fremont, Lisa (Greg) Sines of Ottumwa, Laura (Willie) Glosser of Des Moines, Doug (Dana) Overturf of Ottumwa, Linda (Jeff) Hardie of Ankeny and Sarah (Ben) Elzey of Brownsburg, Ind.; 20 grandchildren, Dustin and Derek Overturf, Lacy Egesdal, Joe Sines, Josh, Jeremy and Nicole Glosser, Nathan, Tyler, Drew and Beth Overturf Luke, Leah, Sam and Mae Hardie, Caleb, Zack, Aubrey, Anna and Ethan Elzey; 11 great-grandchildren, Madi, Tyler, Walker, Keeley, Hunter, Carver, Zoee, Jenna, Josiah, Ellie and Will; a sister, Evelyn Sevier of Oxnard, Calif.; best friends, Rex and Joyce Foster of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Madelon Ross and MaryAnn Smith.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Mel Kendall officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Hospice serving Wapello & Davis Counties, 927 E. Pennsylvania Ave., Ottumwa, Iowa 52501.
