OLLIE — Phyllis Jean Nelson, 60, of Ollie, died March 13, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
She was born April 23, 1953, in Sigourney to Keith and Lola Faris Nelson. She attended Ollie Grade School, graduated from Pekin Community High School in 1971 and from Iowa State University in 1976, receiving a Bachelor of Vocal and Instrumental Music degree. Phyllis taught band and vocal music in Morning Sun and Collins, Iowa, and band at Steamboat Rock, Shellsburg and Beckman in Dyersville. She then lived and worked in Cedar Rapids. In 1992, she moved to Orient, Iowa, where she again taught band for one year. Phyllis moved to Atlantic, Iowa, in 2004 and then to Albia in 2006. She was a member of the Collins Christian Church. Phyllis enjoyed fishing and always had a pet cat.
Phyllis is survived by her parents of Ollie; her sister, Anne Van Der Sloot (Brian); and nieces Ashley and Emily Van Der Sloot, all of Center Point, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Floyd and Leona Faris and Jim and Nellie Nelson.
A funeral service was held Monday at the Ollie Baptist Church; Rev. Carla Nelson officiating. Burial was in the Ollie Cemetery.
