OSKALOOSA — Doris Mildred Shaw, 99, of Oskaloosa and formerly of Hedrick, passed away March 18, 2014, at Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Oskaloosa.
Mildred was born Aug. 18, 1914, in Keokuk County, the daughter of Jesse and Alvina Bruns Tygart. She graduated from Sigourney High School in 1932 and subsequently earned her teaching certificate. She taught country school for three years at Lancaster Township before her marriage to Waldo Shaw April 25, 1936, in Sigourney.
Following her marriage, she was a homemaker and helped her husband Waldo on the farm. She was a past member of the Order of Eastern Star, a member of the Nazarene Church in Oskaloosa and longtime past member of the Hedrick Christian Church, where she was very active and where her entire family attended church for generations. She also was Sunday School superintendent for many years and was a member of various neighborhood clubs. Her hobbies included crafts, crocheting, sewing, embroidery, music, especially playing the piano, reading, mostly religious and history books. She and her husband enjoyed traveling, wintering in South Texas, and they had traveled to every state except Alaska and Hawaii. Her greatest delight was her family.
She is survived by her son, Lyle (Janice) Shaw of Southbury, Conn.; son-in-law, Ed Shultz; four grandchildren, Greg (Vicky) Shaw, Christine (John David) Cowart, Robin (Bill) Spooner and Tad (Beth) Shultz; and eight great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Pearl Tygart and Georgana Hutton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Waldo; a daughter, Linda Shultz; and a brother, James Tygart.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Fremont Funeral Chapel; Rev. Bill Hornback officiating. Burial will be in Abel Cemetery near Fremont.
Visitation will begin at noon Monday at the Fremont Funeral Chapel with the family present from 6-8 p.m. to greet family and friends.
