---- — ALBIA — Mary Shehan, 94, of Albia, died March 24, 2014, at the Monroe Care Center in Albia.

Mary was born Nov. 24, 1919, to Timothy and Lucinda (Lawless) Dailey in Iowa City. She married William “Gene” Eugene Shehan on May 4, 1948, at St. Mary’s Catholic Chuch in Albia. They shared 54 years of marriage before Gene’s passing on Feb. 28, 2003.

A graduate of Albia High School, class of 1937, Mary graduated from the Des Moines School of Cosmetology. She worked as a hair stylist before marrying and staying home to raise her children. She later worked at Sears, Shoe Box and Modern Shop, all in Albia. She and Gene were also custodians at St. Mary’s in Albia.

Mary was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Altar and Rosary Society and the Dancing Grannies, of which she was the oldest member of at one time. She enjoyed flowers, watching hummingbirds and especially spending time with her family and grandchildren. Mary was a great cook and was known for her legendary noodles. She was also a very giving and thoughtful lady, sharing her love of cooking with others.

Mary is survived by her children, Pat (Linda) Shehan of Ottumwa, Mike (Deb) Shehan of Albia, Bill (Dana) Shehan of Fort Madison, Mary Bunce of Albia, Mark Shehan of Albia and Marsha (Randy) Leffler of Albia; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gene; two great-granddaughters, Erica and Haylee; and four brothers, Alois, Tim, Lawless and Delmond.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Albia; Fr. Michael E. Volkmer, C.PP.S. officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Albia.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Tharp Funeral Home in Albia with Mary’s family present from 4-8 p.m. A rosary will be led by St. Mary’s Altar and Rosary Society at 4 p.m. with a Christian Wake Service beginning at 4:30 p.m.

An open memorial has been established in Mary’s name.
