ALBIA — Josephine Elizabeth Dunkin passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sept. 19, 2013, at Jefferson Place in Pella.
Josephine was born Oct. 23, 1925, in the former mining community of Haydock in Monroe county. Growing up, she lived in and around the communities of Buxton, Miami and Lovilia. Jo married Vincent Ray Dunkin on June 14, 1947, in Munterville. They made their home in Bussey for 56 years until health issues caused Ray to move to Long Term Care in Pella in 2003. Jo stayed in Bussey until 2004, when she moved to an apartment in Pella to be closer to Ray. In 2007, she moved to assisted living and in 2008 moved to Jefferson Place.
Jo spent her life as a caretaker. From her children and grandchildren, to her parents, in-laws and siblings, she unselfishly spent hours taking care of others. Jo loved it when family came to visit and going out to eat with Ray. Jo enjoyed solving the daily crossword puzzle, watching the Cardinals and golf on TV.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Albia, and her faith in God was present until the very end.
She is survived by her brother, Joe of East Moline, Ill.; her sons, Jim (Lana) and Mark, all of Bussey; her daughters, Mary Edwards (John) of Pella, Jane (Doug) Phillips of Des Moines and Gina Embray (Doug) of Van Horne; 13 grandchildren, Ryan Dunkin, Zack Dunkin (Brandy), Josh Edwards (Tristan), Holly Roby (Andy), Cody Pech, Michael Edwards, Derek Pech, Quintin Embray, Jolee Williams (Jared), Mikaela Dunkin, Ellie Embray, Mallory Pech and Andrew Pech; six great-grandchildren, Brooke Dunkin, Cole Dunkin, Bailey Dunkin, Ainsley Dunkin, Jackson Edwards and Jensen Roby.
Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Ray, in 2007; a son, Gordon Brent, in 1952; her parents, Emanuel and Mathilda Larson Blomgren; brothers Wilmer, Robert, John, Melvin and Loren; and sister Mabel.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church; Pastor Nancy Reed officiating. Burial will follow the luncheon in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bussey.
Visitation will also be on from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service Monday at the church.
