OTTUMWA — George Charles "Pete" Young, 87, of 1134 N. Wapello St., died Sept. 24, 2013, at Hospice House.
He was born May 12, 1926, in Ottumwa to Grant Ullyses and Merl Barlow Young.
After moving to Cedar Rapids in 1942, he joined the U.S. Navy and received his basic training in Farragut, Idaho. During World War II, he was at sea for a year and was given an Honorable Service Lapel Button.
Survivors include one son, George Edward (Shirley) Young of Hackensack, Minn; one daughter, Patricia Ann (Walter) Parmer of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his sister, Dorothy Byers of Ottumwa, who was his longtime care giver.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Harley, Joe and Kenneth; and two sisters, Orpha Leatherby and Zoe Longaker.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Ottumwa Cemetery with Friederike "Ricci" Boldt and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars officiating.
Open visitation begins 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Robertson-Jay Funeral Home.
