Clarence Johnson

ALBIA — Clarence A. “Sonny” Johnson, 78, of rural Albia, died Oct. 15, 2013, in his home surrounded by his family.

Clarence was born on Sept. 29, 1935, in Ottumwa, the son of Clarence Alexander and Evadna Ruth (Denny) Johnson. Clarence grew up around the Eddyville area and graduated from Eddyville High School with the class of 1953.

After high school, Sonny worked with IBM for a short time and John Morrell in Ottumwa before serving in the U.S. Air Force. Clarence served his country for several years before returning back to the Monroe County area and working with John Morrell for 25 years and later Pella Corp. for 22 years.

On March 1, 1958, in Carson City, Nev., Clarence and Jane Marie Trombley were united in marriage. Sonny and Jane shared 25 years of marriage and were blessed with three children, Catherine, Charles and Cheryl. Jane died on Aug. 5, 1983.

Clarence enjoyed mushroom hunting, woodworking and gardening. He especially enjoyed visiting with his friends and his grandchildren.

Sonny is survived by his children, Catherine Johnson of Albia, Charles (Cindy) Johnson of Las Vegas, Nev., and Cheryl Johnson of Ottumwa; two stepsons, Richard (Julie) Sammons of Eddyville and Jim (Michelle) Sammons of Olathe, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Sonny is also survived by three sisters, Beatrice (Jerry) Gilland of Mitchellville, Joyce Landrum of Lake Village, Texas, and Carol (Gerald) Franklin of Ottumwa; and one brother, Michael (Connie) Johnson of Eddyville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jane; one sister in infancy, Mary Lou Johnson; one great-grandson, David Fincher; and one niece, Christine McCarty.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Eddyville Funeral Chapel; Rev. Lois Williams officiating. Burial with military honors will follow services at Memorial Lawn Cemetery of Ottumwa.

Visitation for Sonny will be held from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the family present from 5-7 p.m.

A memorial has been established to the family and will be decided at a later date.
