OTTUMWA — Marjorie Lea Gray Anderson, 72, of Ottumwa, passed away at 4 a.m. October 17, 2013, at Hospice House in Ottumwa.
She was born October 10, 1941, in Monroe County, Iowa.
Marjorie attended Horace Mann and Ottumwa High Schools, graduating in May 1960. In her elementary years, she played the saxophone, attended Brownies and Girl Scouts. In high school, she was awarded the Torch Club pin for her academic work and was a member of Alpha Delta Chi. Following her graduation, she attended Ottumwa Heights College a year, then to Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kan., graduating with a B.A. degree in history. She also graduated from Emporia Kansas State Teacher’s College with an MLS in library science. Her first job was librarian in the Madrid Community Schools. Upon returning to Ottumwa, she took a job at the “Book Shelf,” where new and used books were sold. She retired as night supervisor for Merrill Security of Eddyville in 2008.
She loved to read, watching sports on TV and bowling. She was a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, a descendant of Edward Fuller. She loved her pets, especially cats. As she says, “I am a cat person.”
Marge will be dearly missed by those who knew her.
Surviving are four sisters, Geraldine (Robert) Glenn, Betty (Milton) Ubbink, Mable Shirley, Rosemary (Gene) Haskell; two brothers, Leland (Evelyn) Gray and Phillip (Janice) Gray; an aunt, Doris Estlack; several cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends, Mike and Barbara Crowder.
She was preceded in death by her birth parents, Fred and Marjorie Estlack Gray; her adoptive parents, Walter and Leora Estlack Anderson; and brother-in-law, John Shirley.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Barnett officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery south of Albia.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Monday with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday.
