Ralph Hackert

RICHLAND — Ralph J. Hackert, of Richland, died Nov. 7, 2013, at Maplewood Manor in Keota.

He was born March 20, 1926, on the family farm south of Pella, the son of Cornelius and Grace (DeZwaart) Hackert, the youngest of five children. He attended Richland School by Pella.

On Dec. 19, 1946, Ralph was united in marriage to Mary Carpenter near Reasor. They were married for more than 66 years. Mary passed away in February of this year.

Ralph and Mary established the family farm north of Richland in 1957; together they worked on the farm for many years. Ralph had many talents that coupled with a strong work ethic and the spirit of an entrepreneur brought on many other family businesses. Ralph's greatest joy was working with his family. He and Mary enjoyed square dancing, and Ralph was an excellent pool player. Ralph had a beautiful tenor voice and was approached several times to sing professionally. He and Mary provided music for many occasions. He was a member of the Richland United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his four children; Bonnie (Dale) Ingersoll of Richland, Sharon (Mark) Traner of Milwaukee, Wis., Rhonda (Mike) Noel of Richland and Craig (Darcy) Hackert of Richland; 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; his parents and siblings, Carl Hackert, Edna VanDenBerg, Ruth Steinhoek and Florence VanGorp.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Richland United Methodist Church; Revs. Wilbur Morfit and Carl Benge officiating. Burial will follow in the Reed Family Cemetery located on the family farm near Richland.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to Lewy Body Dementia Association or Hospice Compassus.
