Gladys Linebaugh

OTTUMWA — Gladys M. Linebaugh 88, of McHenry, Ill., and formerly of Ottumwa, died at 10:10 a.m. April 5, 2014, at Journey Care Hospice in Barrington, Ill.

She was born October 18, 1925, in Salem, Ore., to William and Elizabeth Williams Marshall. She married Arnold J. Linebaugh on Dec 9, 1950. He preceded her in death on Jan. 17, 1978.

A resident of Ottumwa from 1952 to 1983, she was an employee of Union Bank and Trust Company in Ottumwa for several years. She worked for 20 years as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and at Enloe Hospital in Chico, California. She was a longtime member and Sunday school teacher at Davis Street Christian Church in Ottumwa and presently a member of Rochelle United Methodist Church in Rochelle, Ill.

Gladys was a talented athlete and was offered a position on a professional women’s softball team during World War II. Her father did not want his teenage daughter traveling with a group of women in their 20s and 30s, so she was not able to accept. She enjoyed reading poetry, knitting and cooking; the whole family looked forward to her homemade fudge for the holidays.

Surviving are two sons, Craig (Denise) Linebaugh of McHenry, Ill., and Gary Linebaugh of United Arab Emirates; two grandchildren, Stacy (Paul) Rogner and Lisa (Steve) Headon; six great-grandchildren, Alexandria, Majastina, Colton and Landin Headon, Samantha Dethrow and Gabriel Rogner; a sister, Elsie DePuy of LaPlata, Maryland.

She was preceded in death by a son, Chrisley Linebaugh; two sisters, Evelyn Montgomery and Louise Duncan; two brothers, James and Richard Marshall.

Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Davis Street Christian Church. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday with Rev. James H. Wakelin officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Reece Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
