ALBIA — Vera G. Newman, 94, of Albia, died Sept. 13, 2013, at the Monroe Care Center in Albia.
She was born on Aug. 23, 1919, in Albia to Herschel and Nina Bell (Potts) Newman.
She graduated from Albia High School, class of 1938. She then attended Success College in Ottumwa and later William Penn College in Oskaloosa. She worked for the State of Iowa Welfare Department for 43 years. She was an avid bowler in her younger years and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Her nieces and nephew were the joy of her life.
Vera is survived by one niece, Marlene (Larry) Roush of Ottumwa; five nephews, Merlin (Christy) Newman of Albia, Gary (Jane) Newman of Valley Springs, S.D., Randy (Brenda) Newman of Albia, David (Debbie) Newman of Rockwell, Jay (Ruth) Newman of Kensett; and several great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Donald, Raymond and Harvey Clair Newman.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia; Rev. Neil Montz officiating. Burial will follow in Selection Cemetery.
Visitation was held Monday at Sinnott Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Albia.
