OTTUMWA – Robert H. “Bob” Christy, 74, of 409 S. Johnson Ave., died at 10:41 a.m. September 14, 2013, at Ridgewood Nursing and Rehab Center.
He was born November 22, 1938, in Ottumwa to Earl E. and Claudine King Christy. He married Linda Williams June 16, 1963.
A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1957, he attended Northeast Missouri State, Iowa State Teachers College and Parsons College. He served in the Iowa Army National Guard.
Bob worked at John Morrell and Co. until they closed in 1973. He then worked 28 years as a sales manager for several seed companies, retiring in 2001.
He and his wife attended Wesley United Methodist Church. He had been active in youth sports, especially baseball, having coached his sons’ sports teams when they were growing up, and was a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He also had enjoyed singing in the men’s quartet at Bible Baptist Church for many years.
Surviving are his wife, Linda; two sons, Greg (Michelle) Christy of Orange City and Geoff (Cynthia) Christy of Urbandale; six grandchildren, Ryan (19), Madalyn (15), Kyle (12), Grant (13), Campbell (10) and Brandon (8); two brothers, Jim (Beverly) Christy and Dick (Janeane) Christy, both of Ottumwa; three sisters, Patricia (Bob) Bauman of Ottumwa, Connie Wharton of Purcellville, Va., and Judy (David) Ortega of Apache Junction, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Richard James Christy; his parents; a sister-in-law, Joanne Christy; and a brother-in-law, Gary Wharton.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Shrimplin officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery with military services by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
