---- — BLAKESBURG — Jadwiga "Jenny" Szydlowski, 97, of Blakesburg, died Sept. 17, 2013 at her home.
She was born June 13, 1916, in Zilno, Poland.
She married Jan Szydlowski in Germany.
She moved from Poland to the United States with her husband and three small children in 1951; four more children were to come. After many hard years of living in the country, the family moved to the outskirts of Blakesburg. While able, she loved to walk around town and said it cured all ailments.
After her children, flowers were her second love. She could make anything bloom and bloom bigger than anyone had ever seen. At the age of 60, she started quilting, and it became another passion. She started simply going to thrift stores and buying the largest clothes she could find and breaking it down to make quilt pieces. Later she became a regular at fabric stores. Her quilts have been shipped around the country and enjoyed by family and friends alike.
Survivors include three sons, Richard of Plymouth, Minn., Henry of Tehachapi, Calif., and Manfred "Sid" of Blakesburg; two daughters, Margaret Szydlowski of Roeland Park, Kan., and Marjorie Ackerman of Chesapeake, Va.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Bronistawa Dangs of Wroctaw, Poland.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two sons, Eddie and Marion.
A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Blakesburg Cemetery; Pastor Jim Ellis officiating.
Visitation will be from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Friday at Knedler Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Blakesburg Lions Club.
