Carl Hartwig, 85, What Cheer

WHAT CHEER — Carl William Hartwig, 85, of What Cheer, died Monday,  Jan. 14, 2013, at his home.

Carl was born May 8, 1927, to Theodore Perry and Ella Margaret Hartwig in What Cheer. He married Roberta “Bobi” Juanita Walker on Nov. 8, 1946. To that union three children were born, Carlene, Dennis and Donna.

Carl farmed for over 50 years in the What Cheer area. He also worked for the University of Iowa and retired in 1989. Carl enjoyed spending time on the farm with his kids and grandkids. He also enjoyed working with horses.

Carl is survived by his daughter, Donna Kempf of What Cheer; six grandchildren, Roy Charles Danner II, Dwight Eugene (Chrystal) Danner Jr. both of What Cheer, William Dwayne Hartwig of New Sharon, Michelle Denise (Deal) Keasling, Gary Allen (Baylee) Kempf Jr., Aaron Wade Kempf, all of What Cheer; 14 great grandchildren, Nisha, Austin, Ashton, Ethan, Jordan, Riley, Adam, Tori, Trish, Zeb, Garrett, Lilly, Dom and Ellie; two brothers, Merle Hartwig of What Cheer and Larry (Jill) Hartwig of Delta; and many nieces and nephews and extended family.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bobi; three siblings, Herman Hartwig, Doris Clubb and Erma Kempf; infant daughter, Carlene Hartwig; son, Dennis Hartwig; infant granddaughter, Crystal Danner; grandson, Jeremy Danner; and infant great-grandson, Johnathon Danner.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in What Cheer. Burial will be in the Garrett Cemetery near Delta.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. today with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in What Cheer.
