OTTUMWA — Jack Roland Roberts, 71, of Ottumwa, died at 1:20 p.m. November 27, 2013, at Vitas Hospice Morningside Manor in San Antonio, Texas.
He was born August 7, 1942, in Ottumwa to Roland and Lela Pease Roberts. He married Janice Bipes on October 20, 1963. She preceded him in death on August 16, 2011. He married Cathy Thompson on July 29, 2013.
Jack was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He worked for 36 years as a machinist for John Deere Ottumwa Works and was a member of U.A.W. Local #74. After retiring, he worked as a Disaster Relief Specialist for FEMA.
Surviving is his wife, Cathy; two sons, Matt (Jill) Roberts and Chad (Lydia) Roberts, both of San Antonio, Texas; three grandchildren, Nathaniel, Addison and Logan; a brother, James (Barb) Roberts of Coral Springs, Fla.; and a sister, Janet (Jim) McCarty of Ankeny.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Joanne Nelson.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Mathew Andersen officiating. Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
Visitation begins at 2 p.m. Thursday with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
